Gold brooches are one of the capaciously used gold ornaments. The gold brooches are actually decorative pins that are used to tie together two or more objects. The gold brooches were known as fibula in historical times, now they are also called broaches. Starting from the Bronze Age, the gold brooches have passed through a variety of changes in their shapes and sizes. Nowadays, one can see a wide variety of designs, finishes & shapes of gold brooches that can vary from place to place and according to individual tests.

In ancient times, the brooches were particularly made from some precious metal such as bronze etc. Greeks, Celts and Romans used to use brooches as fastening ornament for cloths specifically for safety reasons. Brooches were also used as military equipments and as an essential component of antique garments. Those used in antique garments were designed more intricately than those used in military. The gold brooches were worn by only high status people but in the 19th century they become common among the general public.

Gold Brooches are a great way to adorn oneself and their dresses. The brooches that are having a design of an animal stamped on its surface are called animal headed brooches. The two well known animal headed brooches are tortoise headed and fish shape headed brooches. Pill box shaped brooches were also heavily used in the ancient times. The brooches that are similar to the shape of sun are called sunburst brooches.

The gold brooches are mainly used as an ornamental safety pin. It is mainly used by small girls to hold together two pieces of cloth such as shoulder traps, loose frocks etc. Though gold brooches are most common, gemstone brooches, bronze brooches, silver brooches and bone brooches are also amply used by both men and women, for personal decoration. Gold brooches are also used on shoes and handbags.
